Heinrich Böll Foundation

The new building for the Heinrich Böll Foundation emerged from a competition won by the Swiss architects e2a with a surprisingly technical design that seems to contradict conventional ideas of ecological architecture. The external features are an aluminium façade and the greenish, fully glazed multi-functional floor for public use on the Belle Etage. The spatial concept is determined by an intelligent overlapping of functions and is characterised by a central open staircase that also serves as an auditorium. The energy concept with heat recovery from lights, servers and heating is combined with an inner atrium, which is covered by a glass roof and forms a buffer storage for used and fresh air.
