Berlin Brutalism

Hype or Heritage?

Autonomous and heavy, shaped by structural clarity, the brutalist buildings of Berlin continue to shape the city’s space. They were built for institutions and large-scale urban functions. Today their role within the city has changed. What is it that draws us to these harsh, raw concrete structures?

The tour starts at the architecture building of the Technische Universität Berlin at Ernst-Reuter-Platz. The building is defined by a strict grid, repeated structural elements, and a clear organisation of space. A few steps away, the Deutsche Oper Berlin by Fritz Bornemann stands as a monumental presence in the city. Further north, the route reaches the Regina Martyrum, a Catholic memorial church defined by strict geometry and enclosed spatial conditions.

Between preservation debates and demolition plans, these buildings reflect different approaches to post-war architecture in Berlin. They no longer correspond to their original functions, but they continue to structure parts of the city.
