DZ Bank at Pariser Platz

Interior Complexity within Urban Rules

The buildings on Pariser Platz follow strict urban design regulations that define the square’s façades and proportions. Within this controlled framework, the DZ Bank by Frank Gehry introduces a different architectural logic.

Behind its structured natural stone façade, the building opens into an organically shaped auditorium of steel and glass — the so-called “horse’s head.” Exterior order and interior complexity are placed in direct contrast. Nearby, the Akademie der Künste Berlin responds differently to the square’s regulations, using transparency and openness instead of spatial concentration.

The tour focuses on how different buildings negotiate the same urban framework while producing fundamentally different spatial experiences. Access to the interiors offers insight into architectural spaces that remain largely hidden from the square itself.
