Museumsinsel Berlin

Architecture in Layers of Time

The Museumsinsel Berlin forms a museum ensemble in the centre of Berlin, shaped through successive additions, reconstruction and contemporary interventions. Rather than appearing as a unified composition, the island is defined by different architectural layers that remain visible across the site.
The tour follows this sequence through the Altes Museum, the Neues Museum and the James-Simon-Galerie. Preserved structures, reconstructed elements and deliberate gaps reveal how different historical conditions remain directly readable in the buildings themselves.

Across the island, each intervention responds differently to what already exists, producing a spatial sequence rather than a single architectural image. The Neues Museum, reconstructed by David Chipperfield, is a key example of this approach, where damage, repair and addition remain part of the architectural composition.
