From Berlin Zoo to Alexanderplatz

Berlin is the only European city to have two centres: City West
at Bahnhof Zoo and Alexanderplatz: City West with the Kurfürstendamm, the KaDeWe department store and the new Bikini complex is perceived as the elegant shopping centre of the city. At Alexanderplatz three high rises are under construction and a unique alternative project to the usual property developments shows courage, to break new ground. But buildings of the formerly unloved GDR modernism are also experiencing a new appreciation. The multi-layered House of Statistics, saved by committed citizens, and the Pressehaus with its rotating advertising drum and large-scale artwork are being restored. The tour introduces the history of the two areas, famous train stations and the current perspectives of architecture and urban development.
