Europacity: a new district

The topping-out ceremony for the Anna Lindh House has just taken place at Berlin’s main train station. Designed by Danish architect Dorte Mandrup, the new office building is the first in Europacity to be constructed as a hybrid timber-frame structure. Located directly beside KPMG’s headquarters, its undulating glass-ceramic façade adds another distinctive element to the architectural gateway to Europacity. Just ten years ago, the area north of Berlin’s main station was still a desolate wasteland. Since then, Berlin’s approach to urban development has changed considerably, as have the requirements for new buildings and neighbourhoods. Europacity is therefore often dismissed as a ‘dumping ground for concrete gold’. Yet the new buildings and public spaces are worth a closer look. The residential buildings along the water behind the Hamburger Bahnhof, the Golda-Meir-Steg on the neighbourhood square designed by relais landscape architects, and the thoughtfully designed courtyards all suggest that the new neighbourhood may be better than its reputation.
