Transformation & Revitalization

Sustainable urban development and creative reuse

Berlin is considered a pioneer in the revitalization and conversion of urban spaces. Through selected projects, you will learn how the city is reinterpreting its history and creating places that generate social, cultural and ecological added value – all in the spirit of a sustainable city.
The Haus der Statistik on Alexanderplatz stood empty for decades; the exemplary project for its revitalization sets new standards in cooperative planning. The former department store at Ostbahnhof has also been transformed: thanks to comprehensive energy-efficient refurbishment and redesign, UP! Berlin now offers flexible office space and modern working environments. On the Vollgut site in Neukölln, a vibrant neighborhood with workshops, cultural venues and social projects has been created on the site of a former brewery – based on the idea of urban development geared towards the common good. The Atelier Gardens on the former site of the BUFA studios in Tempelhof are another positive example: A campus for social and ecological innovation is being created here. New ways of sustainable cooperation are being tested amidst historic buildings and modern architecture.
