Unité d'Habitation

The residential ocean-liner “Type Berlin” was designed as one of five apartment giants by French architect Le Corbusier for the Interbau 1957. With its more than 500 social housing units, the building was long considered a deterrent example of a misguided inhuman modernism. It was only after the privatisation and renovation of the gigantic residential complex and the committed work of a voluntary association of residents that the true qualities of this famous offshoot of the French originals became apparent. Despite the absence of a public roof terrace and the inner amenities “road”, the building and its complexly organized apartments, some of which are designed as maisonettes, is an outstanding example of modern living in the city.
