Baumschulenweg Crematory

At the same time as the Federal Chancellery was being constructed, a new crematorium was built in the Treptow district by the architects Schultes und Frank, replacing an ailing predecessor building. The centrepiece is a 10-metre high columned hall, which connects and unites three blessing halls into a square under the stars, the “Campo Stella”. The antique models of the Egyptian temple complex of Sakkara or the Arabian mosque in Cordoba were transformed into a modern architecture made of exposed concrete, natural stone floors of green dolomite and the 29 concrete columns with the signature light capitals. The contemplative character of the cathedral-like room made of massive walls, columns, light and shadow is unique and can be experienced in a special way during occasional concerts and performances of Gregorian chants.
