1950s Housing Projects

The large urban development complex from the post-war period is a candidate for another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Together with Karl-Marx-Allee in the east of Berlin, it represents different political systems and shows post-war housing construction of the highest standard in a variety of ways. The buildings of “Interbau 1957” were experimental and innovative. In West Berlin’s Tiergarten, they celebrated the revival of an international modernism designed by over 50 renowned architects.
